Most correspondence refers to management of the scientific specimens, research, exchange of information, publications, and other curatorial responsibilities. Field books and catalogs refer to butterfly and moth specimens housed in the department's scientific collection. Records are largely 20th century.

Eight of the ten specimens depicted were part of the Grote and Robinson Collection, 20,000 specimens of American and European Lepidoptera donated to the Museum by Robinson in 1870. The other two specimens were among the 4,000 specimens collected during Beutenmuller's Expedition to the Black Mountains from June to October 1912, financed by Samuel V. Hoffman.
